Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Kumon and what do you do?

A: Kumon is the world’s largest after-school education program. We offer a math program and a reading program. Students visit our center once or twice per week, for about 30 minutes per subject. Students also complete short daily assignments at home each day they do not come to the Center. Our goal is for each student to first master material at and below grade level, then move on to mastery of material at 6 months, 2 years, and 3 years above grade level.

Each student takes a placement test to determine the point in the program at which he or she will start. Starting with the basics, each student progresses through the program, and masters each skill, at his or her own pace.

Q: When are you open?

A: We are open for class on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Families choose a primary class day each week. On this class day, the student will receive Kumon assignments for each day of the week. If the student chooses to come a second day, he or she simply brings the completed homework along with the current day’s assignment. There are no make-up classes.

Q: What ages are your students?

A: Typically student ages range from 4 years old to high school. We have, however, enrolled younger and older students on a case by case basis. The reading curriculum covers material from preschool through high school level summary and critique. The math curriculum covers material from preschool number counting through college level calculus and statistics.

Q: My child gets good grades, is Kumon for my child?

A: Yes! Kumon is for every child. Because it is individualized, it helps not only those who are struggling in school, but also those children who seek a greater challenge.

Q: Will my child's progress stop during our vacation?

A: Please give us a note or email us one week before you leave, stating what day you will be leaving and what day you will return. We will prepare a vacation box for your child, so that the daily Kumon habit is not disrupted. If you desire, we can adjust the amount of daily work during the vacation to meet your child’s needs. Please feel free to contact us by email or by telephone outside class hours to discuss any adjustment you would like.

Q: Won't my child be bored in math at school if she's above grade level?

A: When math becomes your child’s favorite subject at school, she will be more motivated, not less.

You might think this way: if she were taking piano lessons and became a very accomplished pianist, would you insist she stop because she was getting too good? Or if she enjoyed playing soccer and rapidly became the star of her team, would you refuse to permit her to continue because she would be bored with soccer? You'll soon notice your child's motivation increase because of her continued success!

Q: What's the hardest part of Kumon?

A: The hardest part is that part which makes the program work: the daily work. For Kumon to be the most effective, it must be done daily. The daily work is not onerous: only about ten to fifteen minutes is required per subject per day. But just like brushing teeth or eating vegetables, a little bit of something good for you each day is optimal. You can’t expect to eat a week’s worth of vegetables on one day and have nearly the benefit you would have from a little each day. You wouldn’t brush your teeth really hard two days a week and expect the same benefit you get from daily brushing.

Kumon is about discipline. And part of that discipline is doing the work each day, and grading and correcting it the same day, preferably at the same sitting.

Q: What steps should I take to enroll my child?

A: The next step is to schedule a Parent Orientation and Placement Test.

To schedule a Parent Orientation and testing please contact the Kumon Center in one of the following ways:
